Wonderful, timeless performances from the RPO under its founder, the great Sir Thomas Beecham. Scheherazade has never sounded so mystical whilst retaining such punch, verve and panache. A piece of music that my life seems to resonate to having been familiar with it since I was 'nobbut a lad', the eastern delights of the Orient are evinced so magically by Rimsky-Korsakov and Beecham wrings the absolute best from the RPO. The filler, which it seems rude to reference thus, is the more unusual choral version of Borodin's beautifully evocative and passionate Polovtsian Dances. You don't often get the voices with this piece and although I was first introduced to it sans singing, I feel it is much the better for such a glorious addition. The sound, given that the recording was made in 1957, is marvellous if a little papery or thin in the treble which is more noticeable with the violin but this hardly detracts from the brilliance on show. Truly performances to rival the very best in this these works.
